New walking tour journeys around Buxton’s iconic landmarks and town’s heritage

A new walking tour group has set up in Buxton with the aim of showcasing everything wonderful about the town.

All About Buxton was set up by founder Rebecca Hyder and friend Karey Lucas-Hughes after the idea came about last autumn.

Since then they researched the town and its history, although they were both working with the Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust and knew some of the town’s stories already.

Karey said: “We wanted to see if we could tell people how wonderful Buxton is and we loved sharing that with visitors so we wanted to expand that.”

They duo led their first tour in August and say it has been a whirlwind since.

Karey, who has lived in Buxton since 2023 said: “We offer two tours; a highlights and potted history which takes about an hour and 15 mins and we also have a more indepth tour where we go into some of Buxton’s most loved heritage places like St John’s church and Clewes Chemist and that one is around two hours long.”

Karey is 65 and Rebecca is 55 and this was important for them as ‘women of a certain age’ to still feel like they had value and could contribute to society.

“It’s was a bit daunting at first but if you want something you have to just go for it.”

The duo also offers private tours as well and recently led a social group from the Health and Safety Executive around the town.

“We aren’t just for tourists,” said Karey, “We are here for everyone who wants to explore what the town has to offer.”

She says opening an outdoor business as the season is coming to an end was a risky move but has allowed them to find their feet and realise what works and what can be improved for next season.

“Although we are planning some special events such a Halloween walk and winter walks too.” Looking back on their journey so far Rebecca said: “It takes guts to start something like this from scratch and we’ve come in for some interesting reactions along the way but we are so proud we are trying this.”
