Colleagues walk 26 miles for Buxton GP with brain cancer

“The fact that people showed up and walked through storm Boelo is testament to how well liked and respected Huw is"

A group of of colleagues braved stormy weather to walk 26 miles raising funds for Huw McCandless, a 39 year-old GP who works in Buxton.

Huw is raising funds to travel to Germany to access personalised immunotherapy treatment. He was diagnosed in 2019 with an incurable brain tumour, and since then he has had 3 awake craniotomies, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Sadly there are no more options available through the NHS to extend his life.

Charlotte - who is a trainee home visiting advanced nurse working for the Acute Home Visiting Service across the High Peak Primary Care Service - with Huw as the GP - organised the walk, She said:

"Huw has dedicated his career to caring for others. Despite everything he is going through he continues to support his patients and colleagues. Inspired by his strength and determination I wanted to organise a challenge, accessible to all fitness levels, bringing everyone together to help raise funding for Huw's treatment abroad."

The walk started at Hartington Surgery in the Peak District, following the High Peak trail to the Stewart Medical Practice where Huw works, followed the A6 into Chapel and Thornbrook Surgery, then through Whaley Bridge and the Goyt Medical Centre, along the canal to Arden House and finished at the Sett Valley Medical Centre in New Mills. Over £3000 was raised.

"The walk exceeded every expectation and was an an incredible day. The fact that people showed up and walked through storm Boelo is testament to how well liked and respected Huw is", added Charlotte.

Huw - who ran the Manchester Half Marathon in 2026 and has raised £1000s for brain tumour charities - was able to walk the final 6 miles of the walk and was overwhelmed with the turnout, the support of colleagues and the funds raised. He's currently undergoing radiotherapy, having had his 3rd awake craniotomy in September.

Huw is living his life in hope and wants to reach his 40th birthday, and see his son Jacob start school.
