High Peak family-run butchers named national champion
A fifth generation butcher in the High Peak has walked away with six top awards at a national butchery award.
Family-run Mettrick’s Butchers is celebrating outstanding success at the 2026 National Craft Butchers Product Awards, having been crowned National Champion in two categories for its Chicken Tikka Kebabs and Italian Bacon, as well as securing an impressive four Gold Awards from four entries.
John Mettrick, Joint Managing Director of Mettrick’s Butchers, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with these results.
“Having enjoyed success with our pies in this competition over the last couple of years, it’s fantastic to see our butchery team receiving national recognition for their sausages, bacon and barbecue products.”
The business, which has been serving the community for over 100 years, competed against some of the finest craft butchers from across England and Wales in one of the industry’s most respected competitions.
Not only were the butchers named as national champions for kebabs and bacon but were also given the prestigious Gold Award too.
Their Italian sausage and Sheftalia Sausage also earned two additional Gold Awards.
John said: “To enter four products and come away with four Gold Awards is an achievement in itself, but to then have our Chicken Tikka Kebabs and Italian Bacon crowned National Champions is something we’re incredibly proud of.
“These awards are a real testament to the hard work, skill and dedication of our team, who are constantly developing new products whilst maintaining the quality our customers have come to expect.
“We’re a family business with strong roots in Glossop, so to be recognised amongst the very best craft butchers in the country means a great deal to us.”
The National Craft Butchers Product Awards are organised by National Craft Butchers, a trade association that has supported and championed excellence in the butchery industry for 138 years.
Commenting on the awards, head judge, Keith Fisher added: “I’ve been lucky enough to be invited to judge at butchery competitions all over the world, but nothing brings me greater pleasure than to see and taste first-hand the quality of products being produced right here on our doorsteps by Britain’s talented craft butchers.”
