British cycle star Armitstead honours tragic MP Jo Cox with Chesterfield victory

British cycle star Lizzie Armitstead paid a touching tribute to deceased MP Jo Cox as she pointed to the sky after winning the Derbyshire Stage 3 of the Aviva Women's Tour in Chesterfield.

Armitstead, who won the stage in the town centre, on Friday, June 17, and went on to win the overall five-stage race, had been so affected by the killing of Jo Cox that she honoured the West Yorkshire MP as she crossed the finish line in Market Place.

Jo Cox was stabbed and shot on Thursday, June 16, in the market town of Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Armitstead, of Otley, Yorkshire, held Mrs Cox in great regard and ITV4’s Aviva Women’s Tour coverage confirmed that Armitstead had pointed to the sky on crossing the finish line to honour the Labour MP.

Thomas Mair, 52, of Birstall, has been arrested and charged with the murder of the 41-year-old MP and also faces charges of grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon.

Mair appeared at the Old Bailey, today, Monday, June 20, and was remanded in custody until his next hearing on Thursday.
