Warning over bogus callers at homes in Derbyshire

People are being encouraged to be on the look-out to protect themselves against bogus callers.

Recent scams have seen fraudsters go door-to-door posing to be from reputable utility companies offering savings on bills.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: “The fraudster will obtain a copy of a recent bill in order to carry out an account takeover for the home owner. False lower readings are then provided to the utility company, placing the account into credit. The offender claims that the property is no longer occupied and the credit is refunded into the offender’s bank account.”

Residents are being reminded to always check the identification of a caller at their address and not to feel pressured into letting them into their home.

They should take the ID card or certificate, close the door and examine it from inside, and to call the organisation they work for using a number from the telephone directory or a utility bill if they are unsure.
