Hawthorns to reopen as residential and dementia care home in Buxton

The Hawthorns will soon be reopening as a Residential and Dementia Care Home - just months after it closed down last year.

CS Caregroup has taken on the Burlington Road facility - less than a year after it was announced by the Salvation Army which ran the care home they would be shutting the facility in a cost cutting measure.

Wendy Critchlow who previously worked at The Hawthorns as home manager has now secured a position under the new provider.

She said: “This is such great news for Buxton.

“This is what the town needs especially as The Gables care home has shut down as well.

“We will be keeping the name as The Hawthorns is an institution and has been known across town for its excellent standards for decades.”

It opened its doors in 1935 initially as a women’s refuge for ladies experiencing homelessness and escaping trauma such as domestic violence and prostitution.

Withstanding the turbulent time of the second world war and continuing to operate through a global pandemic, The Hawthorns has seen many changes over the years.

It began to welcome males in the 1970s and then its first older people in the 1980s.

Wendy said it was always rated as ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission and was only shut down as the Salvation Army were looking to make financial cut backs.

She said: “I know a lot of people, myself included, were very upset about the closure.

“The residents moved out in October and after that the building was gutted so it needs a new kitchen and new floors but it will be lovely to have it open again.” The family-run private business, will have space for 37 residents and a date for reopening has not been given yet as they need to be visited by the CQC before they can welcome residents.

“It’s just nice to know there is light at the end of the tunnel and we will soon be back caring for people and their loved ones.”

A spokesperson for CS Caregroup said: “We are passionate about creating care environments that feel like true homes — places filled with love, dignity, enrichment, and life. “We warmly invite the local community to get behind us as we begin this exciting new chapter.

“We would especially love to welcome back former staff members and old friends to visit, reconnect, and explore the new opportunities that will be available.”

The family currently operates a successful care home in Stockport and they say they are looking forward to bringing that same ‘dedication, experience, and heartfelt approach to Buxton’.

They added: “Our vision is simple: a care home should never feel institutional. It should be a place where people feel safe, valued, stimulated, and truly at home — a place where families have peace of mind and residents continue to live fulfilling lives.

“We are incredibly excited about what lies ahead and look forward to becoming a valued part of Buxton’s community.”

Once officially opened, CS Care groups says it will be offering a special introductory package for privately funded residents as part of our welcome to the community.
