Olly Hayler took on the extreme haircut challenge as a thank you - in remembrance of the ‘excellent’ care he received from nurses at Macclesfield District Hospital when he fell ill.

He was rushed to the centre in September 2017 with a temperature of 42 degrees and ‘falling in and out of consciousness’ after suffering with severe tonsillitis.

Mum Kym Hill, 33, praised nurses at the hospital where the poorly 10-year-old spent a week recovering.

She told how they ‘100 per cent saved his life’ when 10 to 12 of them came running up to distraught Kym asking if she had ever heard of sepsis - rushing him into intensive care.

The mum-of-five said: “It was really scary for Olly because he was on oxygen and there were tubes everywhere.

“I had to leave him there to look after the rest of my children but one of the nurses stayed with him for three hours because he didn’t want to be on his own.

“They were really good to him - when I got back to the hospital he said he didn’t feel that scared anymore.

“If it wasn’t for them I don’t know where we would be.”

Full-time mum Kym said Olly braved the shave to show his appreciation while NHS staff were risking their own safety during the coronavirus crisis.

Though she admitted he ‘sobbed his heart out’ when he got his first look in the mirror.

She said: “He has lovely hair and it was a bit of a shock – then when I asked him if he was alright he said ‘it’ll be alright, it’ll grow back’.

“He says when it’s grown back he’s going to shave it off again to raise more money for the hospital - I’m proud of him for what he’s done.”

However she said Olly had been left feeling a little disheartened by how much he had raised so far - £115 of his £1,000 target at the time of writing.
