Buxton 1-1 Whitby - match report

Mark Reed came off the bench to head home for the Bucks after the visitors had taken the lead through a header themselves thanks to David McTiernan.

It was the hosts who started the brighter with Lee Morris going close early on to extending his tally for the season.

The striker, who is set to be suspended for three matches after his red card against Ilkeston, saw a header go close barely two minutes into this contest.

Whitby, who had drawn three of their opening four league games, showed their intent with a flurry of efforts that kept Andy Warrington busy.

The 37-year old made two saves within the first eight minutes, the second particularly impressive as he had to get down low to keep out a close-range header.

Despite the efforts of Craig King and Leon Osborne, making his first start, the Bucks failed to find a way past Whitby’s defence.

The visitors ended the half as the stronger side with the impressive Tom Portas forcing two saves from Warrington after a couple of rasping 30-yard drives.

The second-half began with a great chance for Whitby when striker Adam Rundle with his back to goal turned and hit a shot that was blocked before the rebound was also charged down after valiant defending from the hosts.

Whitby then ramped up the pressure and it paid off halfway through the second period when they took the lead.

A free-kick from Nathan Mulligan was swung in and McTiernan rose to meet the ball just before Warrington.

On the balance of play Buxton could maybe consider themselves unfortunate to have gone behind.

But Martin McIntosh, who had earlier seen the influential Jack Broadhead go off injured, threw on Matt Thornhill and Mark Reed in a bid to save the game and he was rewarded shortly after with an equaliser.

Grant Black’s inswinging ball in was met with a weak header from a Whitby defender allowing Reed to capitalise as his looping header flew into the net.

Shortly after Reed turned in the area and laid off to the onrushing King whose shot was straight at Town’s keeper.

Moments later another drive by King sailed straight over the bar and as the game reached its conclusion, he then saw another gilt-edged opportunity scuffed to ensure spoils were shared.
