Derbyshire’s bowlers hit back against Essex

Derbyshire’s bowlers hit back after lunch despite another impressive display of batting from the 18-year-old Essex opener Dan Lawrence in the LV County Championship Division Two match at Derby.

Lawrence made 87 before he became one of four Essex wickets to fall in the afternoon session with the visitors slipping from 159-2 to 222-5 at tea.

Derbyshire’s bowling improved after lunch and although Lawrence and Ravi Bopara were dropped in the slips, Essex failed to take advantage with Bopara’s lean Championship run continuing when he was caught behind off Shiv Thakor for 25.

Lawrence looked set to score his second century until he tried to hit Wes Durston over the top and was well caught on the run at deep mid-off by Ben Cotton and with Jesse Ryder becoming Mark Footitt’s 65th championship victim of the season, the game was in the balance at tea.
