Horse-racing ‘Tip Of The Day’

This is always the toughest time of the year for punters, with the ‘crossover’ between the Flat season and the Jumps season. But here’s a horse capable of returning us to winning ways:

Monday October 15

SPIFER

Salisbury 5.00 WIN

Given that he’s been so disappointing so far this season and given that he has one or two wayward quirks, many of you might think I’m bonkers for napping Luca Cumani’s grey. But I cannot resist granting him one last chance in the hope that a proper stamina test (longer trip on testing ground) resurrects his best form. Cumani had high hopes of Spifer after a promising three-year-old campaign last summer when he looked like developing into a Group horse over middle distances. But his tendency to hang led to a gelding operation, from which he might still have been recovering when running flat at Pontefract last time. Since then, he’s enjoyed a ten-week break and goes into this race on the same handicap mark as when runner-up in a warm affair at Ascot a year ago. As the son of one Derby winner (Motivator) out of the daughter of another (Kahyasi), there’s certainly nothing wrong with his pedigree! In-form trainer Cumani also boasts a fine one-in-four strike-rate at this track, while the gelding certainly won’t lack for assistance in the saddle, courtesy of Kieren Fallon.
