Eighties stars Nik Kershaw and Go West play together at Sheffield City Hall

Tours of various artists these days tend to consist of each performer playing a set of their own hits and then making way for the next act on the bill, but for Nik Kershaw and Go West, there will be something different.

Yes, they will be performing their many hits, but they will be doing so together.

And with T’Pau as special guests, it will prove to be an 80s hit fest when the tour rolls into Sheffield City Hall on November 1.

Go West, comprising the duo of Peter Cox and Richard Drummie, was responsible for such hits as ‘King of Wishful Thinking’ and ‘We Close Our Eyes’, and Drummie in particular is looking forward to the tour. “We’ve been fans of Nik since day one,” he said. “His ‘Riddle’ album blew me away when I heard it. Our paths have crossed many times over the years and we’ve always had a laugh and we thought it would be fun to get up on stage and squeeze out a few sparks.”

Nik, whose hits included ‘The Riddle’, ‘I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’ and ‘Wouldn’t It Be Good’, added: “The intention is that myself and Go West will be on stage together and we’ll play on each others’ songs. It’ll make for some slightly different and interesting interpretations.”

As well as being a hitmaker, Nik is also an accomplished songwriter and this comes from his diverse influences.

“Early on, I was all over the shop, “ Nik explains.

“I was living at home with my parents and listening to their Lonnie Donegan and Simon and Garfunkel records, then I joined a jazz-fusion band and was really into David Bowie.”

Bowie turned out to be the catalyst for the young Nik. “I saw a documentary on him and decided that that was what I wanted to do. ‘Aladdin Sane’ was awesome,” he said.

Carol Decker of T’Pau, who had a monster chart topper with ‘China in my Hand’ said: “I’ve known Nik, Pete and Richard since the bad old days of the Eighties and it was a privilege to be Nik’s opening act in 1987 – it was a great start to my career,”
