Buxton Fringe festival now has 100 entries as annual event grows closer

Buxton Fringe has reported a whopping 100 entries as its discounted early bird offer draws to a close.

The figure is going up all the time with participants still able to take advantage of a discounted entry fee of £70 if they get in by the end of March. The final deadline for the printed programme is April 19.Events can be seen building up on the Fringe website and on the Fringe App where audiences can start to plan their movements. Many of the events so far are in the music section including baroque treats from Mr Simpson’s Little Consort, a piano recital for Beethoven’s 250th anniversary from Jonathan Ellis, Gerard Brooks’s organ recital, chamber favourites from Cheshire Chamber Collective and feel-good fare from Basin Street Jazz and Blues. Theatre includes The Ballad of Mulan at the Rotunda, Joanna Lavelle’s acclaimed Crossing the Line, two shows from Fringe First winner Joe Sellman-Leava and a new production from award-winner Debbie Cannon. Rubbish Shakespeare Company performs a family-friendly Romeo and Juliet in the park, while Em Parr takes on 37 roles in No Coward Soul.Another major category is comedy with Rob Coleman reliving his 3000-mile Atlantic row, Robyn Perkins combining science with laughs, award-winner Mike Raffone taking a new turn with comic monologues, Nathan Cassidy offering a fresh show, Roses from Joe, and Naomi Paul returning with more Jewish humour plus biscuits.There is plenty more to discover in the other categories including visual arts, spoken word and children’s events with organisers hoping for new entries in the smaller sections such as film, dance and street entertainment.New Fringe chairman Stephen Walker said: “After a big Fringe40, we weren't sure what to expect this year, but to hit a century of entries by the end of February suggests we're in for a bumper Fringe in July and it's great to see so many entrants making use of our early bird reduced entry fee.
