The championships, held at Bedale in Yorkshire, saw the regions best compete against each other and is one of the main National Cross Country races of the season.

Stanway, of Buxton’s St Thomas More School, completed the 4.6km course at a muddy Camp Hill Estate in an impressive time of 14 minutes and 11 seconds (14.11).

The performance helped his team, the under-15s from Sale Harriers Manchester, to second place from a tough field of competitors.

Sale had four runners in the top 20 to complete a fine day’s racing for the quartet who left with silver medals around their necks.
