The opener has overseen the likes of Sam Conners, Michael Cohen and more developing players come into the first team, while the settled top-order of himself, Luis Reece, Wayne Madsen and Leus du Plooy all enjoyed strong red-ball campaigns.

After the condensed 2020 season, next year will give the younger players a chance to experience a full schedule and hone their skills against tough opposition.

Godleman says the quality at the top of the order gives each player confidence, and he hopes that can aid the development of those at the beginning of their careers.

“Firstly, any batting order with Wayne Madsen in it is going to be strong,” said Godleman.

“To have his experience and skill, not just out on the field but amongst the group as well, is fantastic. Then we have, in my opinion, one of the most valuable all-round cricketers on the county circuit in Luis Reece.

“He’s a really good opening batsman across all formats, and that’s without mentioning that he’s such an effective bowler and fielder. And then to have Leus du Plooy, who is one of the most talented prospects in the country makes the top-order really strong.

“I think with my experience and love of opening, we have a really settled group at the top of the order.

“But even beyond that, for our young players to get another year of development, alongside the experience that we have in the squad, makes it a really exciting time to play for the club across all formats.”
