Perfect start to season for Buxton

Striker Nicky Walker, 21, netted in both games and the Bucks boss admitted he could struggle to hold onto the player if bigger clubs come calling.

After a convincing 2-0 home win over Halesowen Town on Saturday, Buxton followed it up with a hard-earned 1-0 victory at Grantham Town on Tuesday and McIntosh said: “You couldn’t ask for much more, though all the players will tell you they should have scored more goals in both games.

“We performed well in both matches, which were very different games.

“On Saturday we controlled the game and passed the ball very well. But at Grantham it was a bit more of a dogged performance.

“It was a bit more physical, the pitch wasn’t as slick as ours and we had to grind it out a bit. We didn’t get the opportunity to play the pretty football we did on Saturday.

“We have also used nine new signings. We lost our three strikers from last season so we have had to go out and replace them and it’s freshened things up.”
However, one striker still at the club for now is Walker, who showed he had lost none of his ruthlessness over the summer.

“He is a very sharp player who I got last season from Clipstone,” said McIntosh. “I was aware of him for some time, being an ex-Rotherham lad I knew all about him.

“He can sometimes drift in and out of games, but he is clinical and last year scored me four goals in his first three or four games.

“He has been a brilliant signing for me and I just hope I can keep hold of him as I have no doubt the lad is going to play at a higher level.”
The Bucks face another away tester this Saturday at Coalville Town with McIntosh saying: “I expect another very, very difficult away game, which everything is in this division.

“Last night Grantham really did ask a lot of questions of us for half an hour, and we withstood that. As the game went on we got stronger. I expect a similar game at Coalville.

“I’ve know their manager, Tommy Brookbanks, for five years now and he is a smashing guy.

“His teams are always very hard to beat and organised, and I don’t expect anything different from any of his teams.

“It’s been a very pleasing start, but that can all go out the window if you don’t keep your standards up.”
