Boss is proud despite cup exit at Cheltenham

Buxton will be looking to get back to winning ways this weekend after their FA Cup adventures ended at Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

The 6-2 scoreline at their League Two opponents doesn’t tell the whole story of a game where the Bucks led at half-time and had their hosts on the ropes until the Robins finally took control in the latter stages.

Bucks boss John McGrath said: “That’s football for you. That’s why we love it and why we hate it, but we keep coming back for more.

“We just fell short of the upset, but I’m massively proud of the boys, they are down and upset.

“This has been a terrific run and made some great memories. You might pick up a paper and see 6-2 and think Cheltenham battered Buxton, but it wasn’t like that.”

And Cheltenham boss Steve Cotterill was full of praise for the Bucks and their fans, commenting after the game: “It’s Buxton’s day and we don’t get any credit for that. They had great support and they are a decent team, so it was a really tricky game for us.

"We were all calm, all measured, we knew what we were doing and just needed to execute the plan a little bit better, which we did in the second-half.

“This one was a really tricky game for us, so we needed to make sure we navigated our way around it.

“There’s no credit for today, we’re humble enough, we’ve done our job.”

It means Buxton have now lost seven of their last eight games in all competitions, a run they’ll be looking to arrest when they go to Spennymoor Town this weekend.

Their hosts are five points ahead of Buxton in the National League North standings and just one place outside the play-off places, while the Bucks are 13th and just six points outside the relegation zone, albeit in what is again a very tight league this season.

Buxton then host Telford on December 20.
