A plucky performance was not quite enough to prevent a majority verdict going against up-and-coming fighter Archie Durham, of Buxton Amateur Boxing Club.

Durham was pitched against Doyles Davies, of the Jimmy Egan Boxing Club, at the Wythenshawe Forum venue last Friday night. And with Davies, a tough opponent, being urged on by the home crowd, the Buxton youngster soon found out he was in for a testing bout.

Davies immediately puinned Durham to the ropes, closing down his options, and by the time the Buxton lad had figured out the best way to approach the fight, the first round was over.

In the second round, Durham wisely worked from the centre of the ring to take control with his distance punching and smart footwork. He finished the round strongly and had every chance of victory going into round three. Both boxers produced some furious combinations in a thrilling finale, but although Durham never backed off, he couldn’t match Davies’s accuracy.
