The annual doubles charity competition run by the Buxton and District Bowling Association was held earlier this month at Ashwood Park Bowling Club, after a field of nearly 100 local bowlers had been whittled down to just eight pairings.

In the quarter-finals, the Golpin pairing defeated Nick Thorpe and Dennis Theyer of Chapel Park by 21 points to 13.

There was success for Chapel Park’s other two pairings.

John Hall and John Archibald saw off the challenge of Birch Hall’s Scott Jackson and Arthur Gregory 21-17, and Will Archibald and Phil Clapham beat Gary Hobdey and Rob Hobdey, of Fairfield, 21-18.

The final last-eight tie saw Buxton Park’s Geoff Jupe and Terry Fletcher record a 21-19 win over Joe Pyke and John Bramwell, of Whaley Bridge.

The Golpin pair marched into the final with a 21-3 demolition of Archibald and Clapham, while a much closer semi-final saw Jupe and Fletcher edge out Hall and Archibald 21-19.

Jupe and Fletcher were no match for the Golpin duo in the final, the latter winning 21-14 to lift the Jack Hitchings Cup.

The winner also gets to nominate a charity to receive part of the competition’s entry fees.
