Cycling: Buxton riders in Midlands time trial

Buxton Cycling Club members took part in a recent 50-mile time trial in the Midlands and witnessed a tremendous time by overall race winner Matthew Bottrill.

Bottrill posted a finishing time of one hour, 36 minutes and 45 seconds and it proved to be the third fastest ever at the distance in what was also his personal best.

Elsewhere, Buxton CC member Chris Lea finished in 42nd place with a time of 1:52:02.

Fellow club member Steve I’Anson posted a time of 1:55:17 to ensure a 53rd-placed finish on the route that saw riders start from Derby before going through Stoke and back again.

• In the Withington Wheelers 10-mile time trial on the J2/1 course in Cheshire (Monks Heath to Knutsford and back), Buxton’s Tom Thornely completed the course in 22:32 to ensure a 13th-placed finish for him.

Fellow Buxton CC rider Sam Garner rode home in 23:52 to secure a finish of 28th, but he did enough to claim the title of first junior to finish.

• The Clieves Hill Road Race in Ormskirk saw a tight finish with Buxton’s Lee Baldwin narrowly edged out into second place.

Lee has recently earned his first category racing licence and continues to improve his skill and speed in bunch races.

He was pipped to the post by Liam Glen who came home first for his team Wheelbase Altura MGD.

Another Buxton rider Luke Beswick came home in ninth place.

• Away from the world of events, the club is holding continuous events intended chiefly for members, although others are welcome,

The most recent event last week was a hill-climb up Long Hill from the Whaley Bridge side.

In total 30 riders turned up for the event.

The winner of the day was Bhima Bowden in 14 minutes and 38 seconds, narrowly beating Sam Clark who came home in 14:48.4.
