Derbyshire’s Welch not too downbeat after Lancashire defeat

Graeme Welch, Derbyshire’s performance director, wasn’t too downbeat after his side’s innings and 15 runs defeat to Lancashire.

Welch said: “I thought it was a good game of cricket. If we’d have scored another 70-80 in the first innings, we’d have been bowling last on that pitch and you never know.

“It was always going to be difficult on the final day. It was a worn pitch and they had two quality spinners in Simon Kerrigan and Arron Lilley, who both came to the party.

“It was difficult for us but I was quite happy with the way the lads have performed in this game.

“Ben Slater and Chesney Hughes played very well on the third evening and they’ll have taken confidence from that.

“It just showed how difficult it was to play out there when one of the best batsmen in the world is struggling with the spin and bounce.”
