Assistant Coach (Bowling Lead), Steve Kirby, will leave Derbyshire at the end of January to take up the role of bowling coach at Somerset County Cricket Club.

The 43-year-old, who represented the South West county as a player, joined Derbyshire’s coaching staff in 2018 and has since overseen the development of pathway graduates into the first team, including Sam Conners and Nick Potts.

The club will now begin recruiting for a new Bowling Coach to join its staff ahead of the 2021 season.

Kirby said: “I’ve loved my time at Derbyshire and would like to thank everyone at the club, in particular Dave Houghton and Mal Loye as I’ve learned a huge amount from them both.

“It’s been so exciting to see the growth of the team, particularly reaching Finals Day for the first time in the club’s history. There’s a great work ethic and camaraderie within the squad and I’ve enjoyed working with all of the young bowlers across the club and pathway.

“There are some great foundations and with bowlers transitioning into the first team this is such an exciting platform to see them and the team thrive in the coming years.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I’m leaving the club, especially seeing the amazing progression over the last two years, but this move takes me closer to my family and is an opportunity to enhance my coaching career.

“I’ll always be indebted to Derbyshire for giving me such a great grounding and only wish the club the very best in the future.”

Head of Cricket, Dave Houghton, added: “I’ve got nothing but praise for Steve and wish him success as he takes the next step in his career. He’s had two successful years with Derbyshire and has set the benchmark high for whoever comes into the role.

“We’ve got an exciting bowling attack and alongside Daryn [Smit] as Head of Talent Pathway, we’ve got young talent coming through the system to represent Derbyshire.”
