Buxton runners battle testing conditions in Blackpool

Last Sunday, some of Buxton AC's hardiest runners made a return visit to Blackpool's Great North West Half Marathon and were one again greeted by atrocious conditions.

With extreme winds gusting up to 50 mph and waves lashing the course, it was clearly never going to be a day for personal bests.

There were however some notable results in the 1,200-strong field.

Jason Bennett posted an impressive 10th place finish, in a time of 1 hour and 22 minutes, also finishing second in the Vet 45 age group.

Sheila Bradley claimed first prize in the Vet 55 category with her time of 1 hour 49 minutes, while David Fryer-Winder took the first male junior prize in 2 hours and 27 minutes.

Second Buxton AC finisher was Andy Lidstone in 1 hour 35 minutes, taking third place in the Vet 50 category.

Rick Aldred followed in 1.38, while Emma Wentworth was the club’s first female runner in a time of 1.43.

Terry Fowler (1.44), Peter Bailey (1.47), Alan Talbot & Andrew Wearden (1.51), Simon Moorhouse (1.53) and David Forshaw (2.15) completed the men’s team. They were followed by Beverley Golden (2.04), Heather Fryer-Winder (2.06) and Wendy Bainbridge (2.09).

Buxton’s free monthly Pavilion Gardens 5K event will take place from the Broad Walk at 9am on Saturday 12th March and is open to runners of all abilities.
