As part of a national week-long campaign, officers will be visiting towns across the county to speak to people about how they can play their part in helping to identify signs of radicalisation.

A counter-terrorism video, produced by police and students in Derby, will also be launched this week.

The video has now been given Home Office approval to be made available as a teaching resource for schools across the UK.

It focuses on the risk of vulnerable young people becoming radicalised and the changes in behaviour that teachers, parents and peers should look out for.

Derbyshire police’s anti-terrorism lead, assistant chief constable Martyn Bates, said: “We can only reduce the threat we face from terrorism and domestic extremism if we all play a part in preventing young people from being radicalised.

“This is why communities and families have a vital role to play in helping to prevent tragedies on our doorstep.”

Alan Lyon, national coordinator for the Prevent Tragedies campaign, said: “If you know anyone you feel may be potentially vulnerable to being drawn into terrorist-related activity, including travelling abroad to conflict zones, please contact your local police for advice and support on 101.

“You can also visit the national Prevent Tragedies website – www.preventtragedies.co.uk – for further guidance.

“If you see or hear something that you are concerned could be terrorist-related, call the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.”

The mobile police station is currently in the process of visiting Buxton, Derby, Heanor, Ilkeston and Matlock where officers are speaking to residents about terrorism and how to look for signs of radicalisation within their community.
