Tengi, which gives away half of its advertising income each week, usual has a £1,000 top prize and hundreds of £25 and £5 winners. It has already given away over £100,000, in its first few weeks.
But now, in its next and unique super draw, which will take place on Friday, February 26, the first prize is £10,000.
Which means Tengi is really living up to its name, pronounced Ten ‘G’, or 10 Grand.
Neil Laycock, CEO of Tengi, based at the University of Sheffield Bio-incubator, a new business start-ups building, in Leavygreave Road, said: “It’s big news here at Tengi.
“We’ve announced our first super draw, with the lucky winner taking home £10,000!
“This draw is different and replaces the usual weekly £1,000 draw.
“It will be over this two week period finishing on Friday, February 26. And we’re giving users a huge 16 tickets for every friend that joins, which is up from 10 in the last draw.
“The objective is a push for growth, to get as many people to join Tengi as possible.
“Our marketing/PR and awareness campaign is also up and running - details can be found on our blog - so there has never been a better time to invite friends onto Tengi and make it your chat app of choice!
* Tengi is currently only available to UK residents over 16 years. As with other chat apps, sending messages and media when not on WiFi will use your data allowance.

TECH TALK REVIEW
Tengi is already my ‘chat app of the year’, writes Digital Editor Graham Walker.
Why would you use Whatsapp when you can use the free made in Sheffield chat app Tengi and be in with the chance of winning big cash prizes?
It gives away a top prize of at least £1,000 every Friday, at 7pm.
There are alwso hundreds of £25 and £5 winners.
And during this special super draw fortnight, the top prize is £10,000.
Whether you’re a student playing off your university fees, a family looking for the holiday of a lifetime or a couple close to paying off the mortgage - this could make all your dreams come true.
Tengi is the ONLY chat app thatgives away prizes. It’s unique.
Yes you can send texts, emoticons, photos, videos and audio messages. It tells users when their message has been delivered and read.
It’s also easy to set up group chats with friends, family, work, clubs or organisations..
Tengi is free to download and free to use, by anyone with a mobile phone and a SIM card, with messages sent via the internet, including WiFi.
It also promises not to sell your data, give it to advertisers or use message content to help target adverts.
There are no in-app purchases. No catches.
But the best bit, it aims to live up to its name and give away £10,000 every week.
Lucky South Yorkshire folk Olesia Tartakovski, of Sheffield and Rotherham’s Mark Carew, of Herringthorpe, already know what it’s like to win - they’ve each scooped the £1,000 weekly prize. Read Olesia's story below.
Here at Tech Talk we feature an app of the week but after trying out Tengi myself for the past few weeks well, I’ve already got this in the running as app of the year. And it’s only February.

SOUTH YORKSHIRE WINNERS:
Sheffield mum Olesia Tartakovski and Rotherham man Mark Carew know the winning feeling with Tengi - they've both each won £1,000 cash prizes.
Olesia gave half away to help children of war victims in her Ukrainian homeland over Christmas.
It will provide books, toys and most importantly clothes for children, many of them left homeless, living in sub zero temperatures.
The rest she planned to spend on her own two young children, including a trip to London.
Rotherham man Mark Carew is also a £1,000 Tengi winner.
Tengi allows users to send free texts, with emoticons, stickers, photos, video and audio. It is described as ‘the app that gives back’ and ‘Whatsapp with cash prizes’.
Its users are entered into a free Friday night cash draw, with hundreds of £5 and £25 winners.
The usual £1,000 weekly top prize has been bumped up to £10,000 for a super draw on Friday, February 26.
Olesia said: “Tengi is brilliant. A great app. I don’t gamble or even do the Lottery. I signed up because it is a free text service and we have set up a group for parents at school. It’s a very convenient way for us to talk together. The bonus is it gives away cash prizes every week just for using it. I couldn’t believe it when I won.”
Tengi founder Neil Laycock, former CEO of internet service provider Plusnet, hopes her story will encourage others to sign up.
He explained how the more friends you have on Tengi and the more you use it, the more virtual tickets you get for each draw. During the super draw you get 16 tickets for every new contact sign up.
Tengi knows if they are in your contacts list, simply by matching numbers once a friend downloads and installs the app.
He said: “We don’t sell anyone’s data. We make money from advertising and selling merchandise, then give away 50 per cent of our revenue. It’s taking the app world by storm.”
