Swizzels surveyed 2,000 adults in the UK to find out what the nation is most scared of - and then recreated it using its Halloween range.

More than one in four of those surveyed admitted they fear eight-legged creepy crawlies. Heights, clowns and moths also came high on the list of fears.

The artwork was created by Manchester mosaic artist Mark Kennedy, using more than 2,000 Swizzels sweets and wrappers including Drumstick Lollies, Love Hearts, Refreshers, Fruity Pops and Double Lollies.

Sarah-Louise Heslop, marketing manager at Swizzels, said: “Halloween is known for being the scariest time of year but also for its sweet treats.

“We wanted to bring both elements together in a fun way to celebrate Halloween.

“Our spooky spider artwork looks fantastic – and hopefully doesn’t scare people too much!”

The research also revealed 73 per cent of adults admit they are still too frightened to look under the bed before the lights go out at night and 60 per cent would not be able to watch a scary movie alone.

The overwhelming majority of Brits (96 per cent) are superstitious - over three quarters of people (77 per cent) admitted they wouldn’t open an umbrella inside and more than half (57 per cent) of people associate the number 13 with bad luck.

Despite being a fearful nation, it is clear from the research that people are still set to embrace the spooky season and celebrate Halloween. Three quarters of adults admitted they will be dressing up this Halloween and 59 per cent indicated they will be out Trick or Treating with their children to celebrate.

Swizzels is one of the largest family-owned independent sugar confectionery businesses and one of the few confectionery companies to still manufacture sweets in the UK. The company makes a range of well-known products including Love Hearts, Squashies, Refreshers, Drumstick Lollies, Rainbow Drops, Double Lollies and Fruity Pops.
