Pictures from the scene showed a large hole in the wall of the Midland Co-operative Food shop in Chesterfield Road.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: “It is thought that a white Vauxhall Vivaro van was used in the incident that had its roof cut off.”

The cash machine and van were discovered later in a road a short distance from the scene.

He described how a team of at least three burglars using three vehicles used a piece of heavy machinery to carry out their theft of a cash machine from the Central England Co-op.

Police are appealing for witnesses. If you have any information contact Derbyshire Police on 101.
