Derbyshire Police arrest almost 30 potential child abuse offenders

Derbyshire police have arrested almost 30 potential child abuse image offenders in the last nine months as part of a national operation.

The force has worked alongside the National Crime Agency (NCA) and since the operation began, they have carried out 29 search warrants on premises throughout the county, which resulted in 28 arrests and 22 people being safeguarded.

National figures have been published and over 680 people have been arrested in the UK on suspicion of accessing indecent images of children online in the past nine months.

And as a result, nearly 400 children have been safeguarded.

Assistant Chief Constable Martyn Bates said: “Protecting children is a priority for Derbyshire.

“We have a dedicated team that targets purely those who we suspect of accessing and sharing indecent images of children over the internet. The NCA provides us with the technology to identify suspected offenders and we relentlessly pursue every single one.

“We take a very proactive approach to this type of crime because behind every image is a child victim.

“It is essential to try and prevent this type of crime happening in the first place. We do that by providing education and awareness to stop children becoming victims. Also we need to educate people to spot the signs of abuse and encourage early reporting to the police and other agencies.”
