A post on The Old Hall Hotel’s Facebook page read: “It is my sad duty to report that the Old Hall is at present on fire.

“The damage is quite severe and I am not sure when I will be able to get it open again. Everyone is safe. I will keep everyone informed.”

The fire was eventually extinguished at around 10.30pm and firefighting operations have been scaled back.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Authority said: “Initially, the fire was fought in the roof space. After the fire was knocked down from the roof, the fire was located in the first floor.”
