Storm Barney devastates Derbyshire trees

The Met Office warned the storm, which cross the UK from the West, would reach high speeds of 70 mpg and 80 mph over exposed hills.

And in the wake of the incredibly gusty winds, Derbyshire County Council said it's highways division was called out to 33 incidents across the county, where trees lay in roads disrupting traffic.

Of these there was a tree brought down in Walton Road, Chesterfield, and others in Alfreton, Matlock, Holmewood, Duckmanton and Ashford-in-the-Water.

The county Council said: "We have already responded to many of these and are still working to clear other roads."Derbyshire police said there were no major incidents or any threat to life after the winds.

Winds also took out parts of the Western Power Distribution network, as the power company reported its helicopters have been assessing damage in Chesterfield. We have learnt of one power cut so far in Derbyshire, in Ambergate, but most of the disruption after Storm Barney is in the West Midlands.
