Driven by a team of inspirational young people, ‘Team Rickshaw’ departed the BBC’s Media City, near Manchester, on Friday, at the start of an eight-day, 450-mile ‘Salford to Walford’ journey across England which is due to finish live at the iconic EastEnders set during the BBC Children in Need appeal on November 14.

Monday’s leg from Buxton to Nottingham sees the team set out across the Peak District, with their route taking in Flash and Longnor, before joining the A515 near Hurdlow and heading out towards Newhaven and the A5012 to Cromford.

From here it will join the A6 to Ambergate and then follow the A610 all the way to Nottingham, apart from a quick detour through Kimberley and Nuthall. Check the website link above for updates on the team’s progress.

‘Team Rickshaw’ consists of five riders who have each been supported by projects funded by BBC Children in Need: Matthew, 16, from Swadlincote; Flo,17, from Powys in Mid Wales; Jess, 16, from Kettering, Northamptonshire; Carolina, 18, from Tottenham; and Alex, 20, from Misbourne Valley, Buckinghamshire.

Speaking after their arrival in Buxton on Sunday evening, The One Show presenter Matt Baker, who is cycling alongside the team to offer support, said: “It was a wonderful reception. It felt quite isolated when we were on the top because it was pretty dark and pretty cold, but when we came down here we received such a wonderful welcome, and that is what keeps ‘Team Rickshaw’ going, so to sense that was just magic.

“This is day three, of eight. It’s a long, long journey and every single day their confidence builds and builds. To do something like this, which they achieved as a team, is a wonderful thing. They decided how they wanted to get up that hill; the team camaraderie is just fantastic. They are flying now, absolutely flying.”
