Sixty traders sign up for Buxton market ahead of relaunch

And newly-appointed market manager Lindsay Fieldhouse thinks it is a very exciting time for the town.

She said: “It has been a challenge to kick-start the market in such a short space of time, but so many people have got behind it.”

The response to a renewed market has been fantastic, she said, and there will be stalls selling meats, fish, vegetables, bread and cakes, along with clothing, accessories, crafts and household goods.

Even high street names want to be part of the twice-weekly market on Tuesdays and Saturdays, as The BodyShop at Home has taken over a stall to offer environmentally-friendly cosmetics.

Buxton Town Team took over the running of the market from High Beak Borough Council last year.

The official relaunch on Saturday April 30 will see stalls with coloured tarpaulins give the market a more attractive front for shoppers and traders.

Lindsay said: “There has been such a positive response from traders and locals; everyone I speak to reminisces about when the market was thriving and covered both sides of the street. I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing that again.”

She has had been approached by traders from Stockport, Matlock, Chesterfield and Bakewell.

“Tuesday has always been a market day for Buxton,” said Lindsay. “And because of that there are many stall holders who want to come and work in our lovely town.”

To relaunch the market in style, High Peak Mayor Stewart Young will cut the ribbon at 1.30pm on April 30. He will also reveal the name of the customer who has won £100 of goods, including a donation of £50 worth of meat.

Tony Mallet, from AP Meats, said: “We can’t wait to bring our butchery skills to the new market.

“We currently work from 19 market sites, and I think Buxton will prove to be one of our most profitable locations as there are a good number of local residents, along with a massive amount of visitors to the area.

“Customers can expect to bag a real bargain from us and we look forward to meeting them.”

Lindsay has also arranged for musical entertainment on the day, in the hope of giving people more reasons to pop down and visit.

She added: “This is the start of something great. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for the town.”
