Running youngsters clock up the miles

Sporting pupils have covered the distance of here to the Netherlands by running a mile every morning before lessons begin.

Year six pupils at New Mills Primary School measured out a route which, when completed four times, totals a mile.

Children collect straws each time they do a lap and then all the straws are counted to find out the total distance walked, run or a combination of the two.

Key stage one children get running on Tuesdays and Thursdays and key stage two children do the other three mornings.

The total for last week was 289 miles, which is the distance from New Mills to Amsterdam.

A group of year five girls went to watch the Aviva Women’s Cycle Race in Buxton.

They were treated to some cycling training from Cycle Derby beforehand and got to ride the drop-handle Cyclo-Cross bikes around the park with many twists and bumps to contend with, before watching the professionals cycle past.

The school council had a trip to London on Tuesday to visit the Houses of Parliament and to meet MP Andrew Bingham in his workplace.

The day was fun-packed and exhausting but well-worth the journey. The children gained so much from visiting the capital city and seeing all these places that they had only ever seen on television.

The group also visited the National Gallery and saw paintings that they had studied.
