Roads chaos around Derbyshire

Bad weather is causing traffic chaos around Derbyshire as many workers struggle to make it home through the snow.

The A61 in Chesterfield was gridlocked from mid-morning today (Thursday 29) with commuters desperately battling to get out of town, while motorists struggled to make it out to the M1, with drifting snow making driving hazardous.

The northbound section of motorway was at a standstill from Junction 28 onwards from lunchtime, with vehicles at a complete standstill.

Areas in the south of the Derbyshire Times area were initially snow free, but the white stuff is now falling as far south as Derby.

Roads around Matlock, Buxton and Bakewell are all being described as ‘hazardous’, along with numerous locations around the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District.

There has also been a three-vehicle collision on Little Hallam Hill, in Ilkeston, which has forced a road closure.

The Environment Agency has also put stretches of the River Derwent on a flood alert.
