Police bowls project heads to schools in Bradwell and Hathersage

PCSO Anthony Boswell teamed up with qualified Crown Green Bowls Coaches, June and Vic Poke, to encourage children to try their hand at bowls, along with learning all about personal safety on issues such as stranger danger and road safety.

The group visited Bradwell Junior School on Thursday, January 15 and spoke to pupils in class two and three about the importance of staying safe when out and about. On Monday, January 19, officers spoke to year four and six students at Hathersage Primary School.

After their talk, the children were then taught how to play the game of Crown Green Bowls by the qualified bowls coaches.

Some of the comments from the pupils taking part in the project said: “It’s competitive; if you’re not good at one sport you might be good at this one”, “The activities are fun because they challenge me” and “It was great to have the chance to learn a new sport.”

PCSO Anthony Boswell from the Hathersage and Tideswell Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Bowls is often considered a sport for the older generation, so this project allows us to break down barriers between ages and encourage the youngsters to learn more about the game.

“We look forward to visiting more schools in the Hathersage and Tideswell Safer Neighbourhood areas in the near future.”

The Safer Neighbourhood officers are set to visit schools in Bradwell, Baslow, Pilsley, and Great Longstone over the coming months.
