PM supports town’s £2.5mcare facility

The asbestos-riddled hospital is set to be demolished this year and a new facility will take its place – with many of the same services on offer.

Plans to demolish the hospital – submitted by NHS Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) – were given the green light in October.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “I have been talking to Nigel Mills in the new year about the achievements for Amber Valley in 2014, including securing the funds to rebuild Heanor Memorial Hospital.

“The rebuilding of the hospital is fantastic news. It is testament to the work of Nigel, who has campaigned tirelessly on the issue, gaining the support of thousands of residents, who signed his petition.

“Let’s be clear, we are only able to do things like rebuild Heanor Memorial because we are getting our economy back on track. A strong NHS depends on a strong economy, just like everything else.”

Nigel Mills MP said: “I am delighted the Prime Minister has given his public backing to the rebuilding of Heanor Memorial Hospital.

“The new facility will be a superb community asset and will help countless people locally.”

CCG chief officer Andy Layzell said he was delighted at the amount of public support the health centre proposals received.

He said: “This is a significant investment in the current economic climate which will ensure high quality health services that best meet the needs of the population.

“We are track for the opening of the new health centre in 2017.”
