Pictures have emerged showing people gathering at Buxton’s so-called Blue Lagoon – despite a senior firefighter’s plea for everyone to stay away.

The cold water at the disused quarry pool at Harpur Hill is nearly as toxic as bleach – and dead animals and old vehicles are among the dangerous things which lie below the surface.

He said: “By swimming there or even playing in or close to the water, you are putting your own life – and that of the emergency services that would be called to help you – into danger.

“Please act responsibly – stay away from the area and keep out of the water.”

This warm Bank Holiday Monday, firefighters who are at the scene in case there is an emergency have taken these pictures showing people at the site.
