Chapel-en-le-Frith’s leaders praise its ‘beautiful’ residents for mutual aid response

A Chapel-en-le-Frith mutual aid group helping vulnerable self-isolators proves the town isn’t beautiful ‘just because of the scenery’, say town leaders.

Chapel-en-le-Frith COVID-19 Mutual Aid group attracted 1,000 members - just a week after it was set up.

County, borough and parish councillors and High Peak MP Robert Largan all leant their signatures to a letter praising the town’s ‘true community spirit’ after it’s ‘incredible response’.

They wrote how in a heartening show of warmth five bottles of sanitiser were delivered to a young mother with a severely disabled child within 30 minutes of her plea for help.

The frantic mum posted on the group’s Facebook page how she needed the cleaning fluid to administer her daughter’s medicine.

However, the letter read: “Due to panic-buying she was about to run out and feared for her child’s health.

“Within 30 minutes of the post for assistance she had five bottles of hand sanitiser delivered to her from different members of the community and dozens more offers of help - this is us at our best.

“This group is showing us that Chapel-en-le-Frith isn’t just beautiful because of the scenery but because of the people who live here.”

However group organisers say as the coronavirus crisis is only yet in its infancy the toughest challenges are yet to come – so they are asking for more support.

They are encouraging anyone in Chapel or its parish area to join.

The group was set up on March 16 - to put people who needed help during the crisis in touch with those who can help.

A letter from Chapel Parish Council’s vice-chair Charles Lawley was written and delivered to all houses in Chapel within three days - encouraging people to join and directing them to local businesses and volunteers who can help.

Councillors wrote: “The results we are seeing in the group show the community at its best - people are getting help within moments of asking for it.

“Chapel is showing true community spirit by joining together in this unprecedented time of crisis, with people who need help desperate to help those in need of help.”
