Peak community groups receive £22k boost

Community projects from around the High Peak have benefited from a new round of grants from Derbyshire County Council.

More than £22,000 has been awarded by the authority to six groups in the area through its capacity building grants and friends and good neighbours grants.

The Voluntary and Community Services Peaks and Dales, in Buxton, was awarded £7,998 to increase the area which it covers and work with the University of Derby Buxton, to encourage younger people to become volunteer befrienders.

The Volunteer Centre, in Glossop, was awarded £7,613 to recruit 12 additional volunteers to offer social sessions for people with the early stages of dementia.

New Mills and District Volunteer Centre was awarded £3,000 to recruit more volunteer befrienders and provide them with training in mental ill-health and dementia.

The Grapevine Project, in Buxton, was awarded £2,000 to provide a community allotment for people with mental ill-health in the area.

Bakewell Community Arts Workshop was awarded £1,223 to develop a social group for people to learn and take part in crafts.

And Speak and Eat, in New Mills, was awarded £730 to develop a social group for people with learning disabilities in the High Peak area.

Cabinet member for adult social care Cllr Clare Neill said: “We know that loneliness and isolation in older and vulnerable people is increasing, which is why these grants and the Derbyshire Trusted Befriending Network as a whole are so important.

“The excellent work these groups do in their communities is vital in helping people continue living independently, safely and well in their own homes. It is a refreshing change to be able to announce some good news.”
