New Mills transformed into gallery for Town Trail

New Mills town centre was transformed in to an art gallery on Saturday, as shops and businesses gave up their window displays to make way for exhibitions.

The twist of this year’s Town Trail is that it features artwork by children displayed alongside renowned artists in unusual places, spaces and pop-up venues.

More than 30 artists from across the UK have taken part including Kat Button, Sharon Leahy-Clark, Claire Weetman and Teresa Wilson.

The aim of the event, which is part of New Mills Arts Fest and runs until June 1, is to make contemporary art more accessible as it allows residents to view paintings, films, sculptures, installations and drawings at any time.

Class 8M, from New Mills School, created work inspired by London artists Mark Powell and Claire Brewster and the way they both use unusual surfaces.

Their exhibition is now on display at The Pride of the Peaks pub, on Market Street.

While High Peak artists Amanda Whewell and Lucy Gell worked with New Mills Primary School to create displays at Indian Shamis Saffron, on Union Road, and interior shop New Mills Décor, on Church Road.

Brochures including trail maps and a full programme of events are available from New Mills Library, on Hall Street, and New Mills Heritage and Information Centre, on Rock Mill Lane.
