Glossop Kinder Velo Racing Club posted an appeal on fundraising website Crowdfunder last month asking for help to raise £1,000 in order to form a team.

The page has now raised £1,250, thanks to 21 backers including DBS Accident Repairs and Jack Badger Carpentry and Masonry in Glossop, Cycle to the Cinema in Grindleford, Marple Stationary Supplies, Vamos Cycling Holidays in Spain and Forest Explorers in Cheshire.

The funding will be spent on subsidising race entry fees, travel and kit costs of all team members, allowing them to compete more often in a wider variety of events.

Team kit, banners and equipment will also be bought to help the riders look like a team and give them a recognisable presence at events.

The team’s vision was to provide a platform in Glossop that closes the gap between cycling for leisure and racing bikes as a sport, embedding cycle racing into the local community.

The club also wanted to develop individual talent through a programme of cycle racing, inspiring the next generation of Bradley Wiggins and Laura Trotts, and nurture up and coming talent especially junior and women cyclists.

The team now intends to taking part in weekly races such as the Manchester Regional Track League at the Manchester Velodrome and the Tameside Cycle Circuit League in Ashton, as well as road races throughout the North West, Yorkshire and the Midlands.

There will also be an 80 or 53-mile race for 300 riders starting in Glossop and going through Edale and Castleton, the High Peak Hog, on May 11.

Some team members will be taking part in international events such as the Paris Roubaix sportive and L’Etape du Tour, the amateur stage of the Tour De France, and the Ride London Surrey 100.
