Motorist caused crash after overtaking bus

Steven Griffin was driving a Ford Escort along Hayfield Road at around 5.30pm on February 2 when a bus which was travelling in front of him went to pull into a bus stop, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard.

Griffin pulled out to overtake both the bus and an Audi vehicle which was travelling immediately behind it, which also pulled out to overtake, prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said. The Ford driven by Griffin then collided with the front of the Audi vehicle, causing it to spin and hit the bus and then a kerb. The Audi driver was injured in the collision but none of the bus passengers were hurt, Mrs Fitzgerald added.

Griffin, 25, of Whitfield Park, Glossop, was convicted of driving without due care and attention in his absence.

Lisa Tinsley, defending, said: “He did indicate to overtake but unfortunately the Audi driver decided to overtake at the same time and that is why the collision occurred.

“Mr Griffin is a plumber and requires his licence for his employment.”

Griffin was given nine penalty points, fined £375 and ordered to pay a £37 surcharge and £100 costs.
