Millennium Walkway closed 'until further notice' on safety grounds

Derbyshire County Council said the pathway at The Torrs was shut yesterday (Thursday) due to a persistent drainage issue which was presenting a hazard for bridge users.

The entire walkway – opened in 2000 to mark the turn of the century - has been cordoned off until further notice while investigations into the cause of the overflow are carried out.

A diversion is in place along Footpath 96, Station Road, Rock Mill Lane, towards Torrs Riverside Park and vice versa.

Discussions are ongoing between the county council, Network Rail – whose land the drain is on – United Utilities, which is responsible for other drains in the area and High Peak Borough Council’s environmental health team. A meeting is to be held "at the earliest available date" to identify how the problem can be fixed.

Coun Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said: “It’s unfortunate that we’ve had to take this action but the leak is getting worse and we need to close the walkway for safety reasons until the problem is resolved.

“A meeting has been called with all the organisations involved so we can get this issue sorted and reopen the walkway as soon as possible.”
