Ben Brindley, of Brindley Garden Products, said it would be a welcome addition to the town and would help boost the economy.

Ben, of Tideswell, said: “I think it would have a positive impact.

“I used to trade at Buxton Market about six or seven years ago but I moved away because of the lack of footfall and support from the council. I think it was when I made £20 in a day.

The carpenter, who makes bird tables, planters and benches and has a shop in Chapel-en-le-Frith, added: “Now I use Wilmslow and Northwich artisan markets, Bakewell Farmers’ Market and Macclesfield Treacle Market.

“I think if I hadn’t had moved, I would be considering packing it in.

“Buxton could do with an artisan market. Buxton’s living in the dark ages.

“The town is on a downward spiral, we need change.”

As reported last week, High Peak Borough Council and Buxton Town Team are working in partnership with the Market Company on a trial for two artisan markets, in June along Spring Gardens and July on the Market Place.

The authority hopes the scheme will breathe new life into the rapidly declining market, but a long-standing trader believed it could have a negative impact on both the town’s existing market, and local shops.

Proposals to relocate the market from Higher Buxton to another location in the town will also be considered as part of the review.
