The light aircraft came down in a field at about 1.30pm, closing the southbound lane of the motorway between junctions 27 (Hucknall) and 26 (Nottingham).

The picture, taken by Richard Roworth, of Hucknall, shows the plane’s tail sticking out from the grass.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire police confirmed there were two casualties and an investigation had begun.

Police, fire and ambulance services attended the incident.

Meanwhile, three people suffered minor injuries when four cars collided on the M1 southbound between junctions 29 (Chesterfield) and 28 (Alfreton) at about 2pm.

Both crashes have been causing big delays for drivers around Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
