Alfie Frawley, who had open heart surgery at ten days old, has had a crocodile painted over his scar as part of a GCSE student’s art project.

The photo of the brave six-year-old, which his mum posted on social media, proved so popular that Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation in New York got in touch to say they’d like to share his inspiring story on their website.

Elyse Thomas, the 16-year-old student artist, of Chapel, designed the body art as part of her project covering scars entitled Disguise at Hope Valley College in Hope.

Alfie chose an image of the aquatic reptile because he tells people that he got his scar when he was attacked by a crocodile. Alfie was born with a congenital heart condition called transposition of the great arteries and a co-arctation of the aorta.

His mum Alison, 39, said: “He of course knows he had a poorly heart but likes to impress his friends and when he was younger I think it was his way of dealing with not wanting to think about the fact he had been in hospital and had an operation.

“Alfie is very proud of his scar, even prouder now he has this picture. He loves it!”
