The duo have been since Rick, 41, moved into the village six years ago. He has sadly lost his mother to cancer and his father has also been diagnosed as terminal as has his wife Amy’s grandmother.

Nick who is an operations manager for Network Rail said: “The idea for the trip started as all good ideas do - over a couple of pints in Buxworth Club one night and as much as I’ve told Rick how much it hurt he’s still determined to do it.

“The first time I did it I had read once that as long as you can manage two days of cycling 50 miles you can tackle Lands End to John O’Groats. That’s not true. I wasn’t cycle fit at all and had to stop and buy bath sponges to pad out my seat.

“Whereas Rick has taken it very seriously and has gone out and properly trained for it.”
