Flurry of calls leads to busy Sunday for Peak District rescuers

Team members, who throughout the day provided cover for the annual Edale Skyline race, responded to six incidents.

These included an early afternoon call to provide assistance to a runner near Archer Gate who was suffering from hypothermia due to the conditions.

From here they responded to reports of a missing walker on the Howden Moors, after a family walking group had become separated. With the assistance of colleagues from Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team, the family were reunited at the trig point at Back Tor and escorted safely back to their vehicles.

The Edale team was then called to assist a Duke of Edinburgh group from Ipswich.

A team spokesperson said: “Due to the deteriorating weather, members of the group became exhausted and hypothermic.”

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance eventually located the young people near to the top of Blackden Brook and transported them to safety.

The team’s fifth incident of the day, at around 4pm, resulted in them joining Buxton Mountain Rescue Team in the rescue of a collapsed male near to the top of Grindsbrook Clough. The casualty, who was found to be hypothermic, was flown by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to Wythenshawe Hospital.

Meanwhile, Edale team members treated a further four casualties from the Skyline race.
