Electric car charging points unveiled at eight Derbyshire hospitals

Charging points have been switched on at community hospitals across Derbyshire – and any members of the public can use them to recharge their own electric cars.

The move is part of a wider, award-winning initiative by Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust to reduce the environmental impact of travel by its staff and to support sustainability in the local community.

The trust has switched on new charge points at eight hospital locations around the county, including Babington, Bolsover, Cavendish, Ilkeston, Newholme, Ripley, Walton and Whitworth Hospitals.

This is in addition to the charge point that was installed at Clay Cross Hospital in 2014, now offering space for up to 18 electric vehicles to be charged at the same time.

The charge points have been funded by a grant from the Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles. This has enabled the charging points to be installed and for the introduction of nine additional new ultra-low emissions (electric) vehicles for use by staff.

Mark Armstrong-Read, senior project manager with Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I think we are well ahead of the game in the NHS in terms of the number of sites and charging points we have in total.

“As our services are spread throughout Derbyshire our staff clock-up a lot of miles going out and about to see patients, so it is even more important that the way we work is sustainable.”
