Eastwood community group Chapter and Verse is flourishing

A committee of six local people (three lads and three ladies) was formed at the first AGM.

Our first project was to be the Hazel Braithwaite Achievement Award which would be put to Eastwood Town Council for approval.

This was accepted and accomplished.

The second was weekly visits to a local nursing home. Two of our members took this on board to befriend dementia residents. This is ongoing.

The group then enrolled in the Pentrich and South Wingfield Revolution Bicentenary Group.

This is ongoing with entire group involved and one member on the funding committee.

Three of our members have now contributed to a new project called Memory Café for Millside Hospital Radio, which you can listen to and find out more at www.millsideradio.co.uk/.webloc.

We are helping to promote new ideas for Millside Radio special programmes.

The group have also taken part in special event projects. The first of these was called The Pit and the Plough and the Penrich Revolution, in the Sun Inn Gardens last July, as part of the Eastwood Arts Festival, sponsored by Alex Khan and Broxtowe Borough Council.

Another achievement of the group was to promote Eastwood St. Mary’s Dinner Club through the Eastwood and Kimberley Advertiser, which was published in a July edition.

In other news, a two canals walk was recently led by Chapter & Verse, sponsored by Erewash and Amber Valley Autumn Footprints. This walk attracted seventeen ramblers.

Several C&V members were also present at Shipley Park for the ‘Fooprints Opening Ceremony’ prior to our own walk. C&V photos and walk review appeared in a September issue of the Advertiser.

Another aim of the group is to help with gardening for elderly disabled residents in local area. This is an established project by a C&V member.

We also purchased a special wheelchair and doorplate to enable safe access into and out of property.

Chapter and Verse were recently invited to judge the under 18s poetry competition for the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Heritage. The winning entry was by an 8-year-old student.

A collaboration with D.H. Lawrence Blue Line Poetry walks is on the C&V agenda for Saturday October 18 starting at 10.30am to 12pm. The group will meet at the Birthplace Museum, Victoria Street.

C&V members will also be at Kimberley Library for a Penrich Revolution Talk at 10.00am to 11.30am, also taking place on October 18.
