DH Lawrence Society: November events

It is such a relief that several events related to D.H. Lawrence will be providing welcome illumination to the otherwise somewhat dark and funereal month of November.

On Wednesday November 19, the former secretary and tremendous stalwart of this society, Ron Faulks, is being honoured for his remarkable services to the community by being awarded the Freedom of the Borough. The ceremony takes place at 7pm, and the society will be represented by its Chairman, Malcolm Gray, and his wife, Rosie. That same evening, at 6pm, as part of the National Festival of the Humanities, society member and regular speaker to the society, Neil Roberts, of the University of Sheffield, will give a free talk in the DHL Heritage Centre, on the engrossing subject of D.H. Lawrence and Mexico. To book a place please phone 01773 717353.

At the last meeting of the D.H. Lawrence Society Council concern was expressed that, although direction to the Lawrence family grave is well signed, the lettering of the inscriptions has become indistinct. It was agreed we write to the council regarding this simple matter of maintenance. What a thrill it always is to read the single word epitaph to Lawrence on this monument, below his name ”Unconquered”!
